The barryvan compo is a monthly competition in which artists compete to produce a piece based on a given "inspiration". Contestants can enter songs in MP3, OGG, or WMA formats.
Anyone can enter the compo - there are no prerequisites other than that you base your entry on the inspiration below.
Current Round
We're going back to the classics for this round, with the theme from Elgar's famous Enigma Variations as the inspiration. This haunting melody never quite resolves into major or minor, and leaves you hanging. Elgar wrote it in 1898-99.
You can download it as an image, a PDF, a MIDI file, an Impulse Tracker file, or an OpenMPT file. You can also find the piano score here. You can listen to the full piece here.
It has been suggested that whilst Elgar daydreamed at the piano, one of his melodies caught his wife's attention. As she liked it, she asked him to repeat it. Elgar, to amuse her, improvised variations on the melody to either portray one of their friends or their musical style. This was the origin of the Enigma Variations.
When you're working with the track, feel free to take it wherever you would like to. Turn it into a dance track, a rock track, a noise experiment; in short, anything at all.
Important announcement: The winner of this competition's track will be reviewed numerous times in a Review Competition being run by Tricky (from Trax In Space). If you would not like to be eligible for reviewing, just mention it in the comments. Note that you don't have to be a member at TiS, visit TiS, have anything to do with TiS to compete. I will put the winning review up alongside the winning track once the reviewing competition finishes.
